Ruth Wakefield, the owner of the Toll House Inn, added chocolate bar pieces into her cookie batter thinking that they would melt. Instead, the classic chocolate chip cookie was born. Decades later it remains one of the most loved treats around the world.

· 1 teaspoon baking soda

· 1 teaspoon salt

· 1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened

· 3/4 cup granulated sugar

· 3/4 cup packed brown sugar

· 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

· 2 large eggs

· 1 2/3 cups (11-oz. pkg.) semi-sweet chocolate morsels

· 1 cup chopped nuts
